Fried Cornbread: A Crispy Southern Delight
Ingredients for Fried Cornbread
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with a splash of vinegar)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
How to Make Fried Cornbread
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using). In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until smooth. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
Step 2: Heat the Oil
- Heat the Oil: In a large skillet or cast-iron pan, pour in enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom, about 1/4 inch deep. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
Step 3: Fry the Cornbread
- Cook the Cornbread: Using a ladle or scoop, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until the edges are golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Flip and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes until crispy and golden.
Step 4: Drain and Serve
- Drain and Serve: Remove the fried cornbread from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve warm.
