Old Fashioned Fudge: A Rich and Creamy Classic Treat
Ingredients for Old Fashioned Fudge
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- Pinch of salt
How to Make Old Fashioned Fudge
Step 1: Prepare Your Pan
- Line a Pan: Line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal later. This will make cutting the fudge much easier!
Step 2: Cook the Fudge Mixture
- Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and a pinch of salt. Stir well to combine.
- Bring to a Boil: Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until it reaches a rolling boil.
- Boil: Allow it to boil without stirring for about 5 minutes. Use a candy thermometer to check for a temperature of 234°F (112°C) for soft ball stage.
Step 3: Add Butter and Vanilla
- Remove from Heat: Once the fudge reaches the right temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until the butter is melted.
Step 4: Beat the Fudge
- Cool Slightly: Let the mixture cool for about 5-10 minutes. Then, using a wooden spoon or electric mixer, beat the fudge until it thickens and loses its shine.
- Add Nuts: If using, fold in the chopped nuts at this stage.
Step 5: Pour and Set
- Pour into Pan: Pour the fudge into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
- Cool Completely: Allow the fudge to cool completely at room temperature before cutting into squares.
