  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella sub: provolone or Monterey Jack
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar sub: Colby Jack or pepper jack

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 2 tsp olive oil sub: avocado oil
  • 1 lb ground beef sub: ground turkey or plant-based crumbles
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion, finely diced sub: white onion or shallots
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced sub: garlic paste

  • 2 tbsp brown sugar sub: honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard sub: Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce sub: soy sauce

Instructions

  • Split the ciabatta loaf and place it cut-side up. Spread softened butter over the surface, then sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C). Toast the bread for 5 minutes to prevent sogginess and build flavor.
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook 5–7 minutes until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  • Add the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook 2–3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  • Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thick and glossy.
  • Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toasted bread halves.
  • Sprinkle mozzarella and sharp cheddar over the top for maximum melt and flavor.
  • Bake 8–10 minutes or until cheese is bubbling and golden. Broil 1–2 minutes for extra crispiness.
  • Let cool for 2 minutes, then slice and serve warm.

Notes

Substitutions like turkey, plant-based crumbles, or lighter cheeses can reduce calorie density while keeping flavor intact.
