This French Onion Chicken Bake brings together caramelized onions, tender chicken, rich broth, balsamic depth, and melty cheese for a comforting yet easy weeknight dinner. Inspired by classic French onion flavors, this dish tastes gourmet without requiring complicated steps.
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 12–15 minutes until golden and caramelized. Add garlic and thyme in the last 1–2 minutes.
Pour in the beef broth and balsamic vinegar. Stir and scrape up any browned bits. Let simmer for 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish and place the chicken breasts inside. Pour the onion mixture over the chicken.
Sprinkle mozzarella evenly over the chicken, followed by Parmesan for a golden crust.
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) and cheese is bubbly. Broil for 2 minutes if desired for extra browning.
Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley.
Notes
For a lighter version, substitute olive oil for part of the butter or reduce the cheese. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or roasted vegetables.
